MYTH - herbal teas are real teas

'Real' or true teas are actually from the Camilla Sinensis plant. This includes black tea, white tea, oolong tea and green tea. These plants are usually found in tropical and subtropical areas. The correct term for herbal tea is actually 'tisane'. Tisanes come from the water-based infusion of herbs, spices, flowers, seeds, bark and roots. Essentially a herbal infusion or tisane is any plant-derived drink other than true tea. But let's face it we're not going to stop calling it herbal tea are we? More on tisanes here.

TRUTH - herbal teas are better than true teas

True teas contain caffeine and high levels of tannins (depending on the type). Herbal teas have no caffeine and very low levels of tannins (almost non-existent in some). Black tea (earl grey, English breakfast) being the darkest, releases the most tannins, which if you are iron deficient or taking iron supplements, the tannins will interfere with iron absorption.

I, myself used to be a big black tea drinker and couldn't understand why my iron levels were always low even after eating iron rich foods. When it finally clicked that this could be the cause, stopping my tea 'addiction' was a challenge but once I changed my mindset and cut back I saw improvement. This is definitely not the cause of all iron issues, this just happened to be my own.

True teas are also considered diuretics (just like coffee), where consumed in high quantities can actually dehydrate you by getting your body to release extra fluids. This isn't a big concern if you do drink a good amount of water in between. Therefore, never substitute true tea (or coffee) as your sole source of water intake, you'll just become more thirsty. Herbal tea on the other hand can be factored into your daily water intake and will have no effect on your hydration levels.

A plus side of true tea - it does contain good amounts of antioxidants. These antioxidants fight free radical damage in the body and help to prevent oxidative stress. Antioxidants are found in all fruits, vegetables and plants in different plant compounds and their vitamins.

BENEFITS

For thousands of years cultures have used plants for their roots, leaves, bark, flowers and seeds to aid in health ailments or to maintain ones health. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Indian Ayurvedic Medicine are just two well known practices that have been adopted by the world for their long reported history of healing and strengthening of the human body. In the modern age, scientific research has and is currently being conducted on the reported benefits of these medicines (plants). There are thousands of scientific studies available online for anyone to access when a little more understanding is needed.

True tea is just one ingredient, while herbal tisane when made properly combines many ingredients. These ingredients work in synergy with each other. By combining specific herbs with others, greater health benefits are achieved. Working as a team is better than working alone. This motto is not just for the workplace but for nature too. This is why herbal tisane blends are far superior.

It's not just about steeping one ingredient, but many, to create intense or mild flavours, either to benefit the body, the mind, or the soul.

As a result of herbal blends, specific health ailments or benefits can be targeted. This means a herbal tisane blend can help with stress and anxiety, digestion and immunity, cleansing and detoxing, organ health, pregnancy and motherhood, female and male reproductive health, blood sugar levels, cholesterol issues, cognitive health... and the list could go on.

Herbal tisane is not true tea and the confusion that they are similar or that 'tea is tea' is far from correct. Herbal tisane is an under-utilised natural medicine that is easily overlooked. It is not just flavoured water, it is the drawn out medicinal benefits of plants into a bioavailable form that is easily consumed with no negative impact to your health.

Our Organic Herbal Tisane Blends that are available on our website are blended with organic or wildcrafted ingredients with no additives or preservatives, or added natural flavours.
