Jilungin (terminalia cansecens)
Jilungin is a native Australian bush herb wild harvested by the Nyul Nyul community in the Dampier Region of Northern Western Australia. Traditionally used to promote a good nights sleep, indigenous communities swear by its effectiveness. Found to have more antioxidants than green tea and contain high amounts of tryptophan (a chemical that helps the body produce melatonin and serotonin). It’s called a ‘Dreaming tea’ for a reason.
Passionflower (passiflora incarnata)
Passionflower helps to boost the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, this has the ability to lower brain activity promoting calmness and relaxation by regulating mood. These effects are also said to aid in relieving anxiety and stress. Promising studies show that passionflower can help in improving sleep quality. This plant also helps to soothe an upset stomach.
Lemon Verbena (alousia triphylla)
This herb contains melatonin which is a hormone that our bodies naturally begin secreting at night, however some people have trouble producing this hormone (artificial light from technology is one cause), and this is where lemon verbena helps best. A lack of melatonin in the body is a big contributor to insomnia and sleep disorders. Lemon verbena also contains volatile oils that assist in activating the GABA system in the brain that helps to switch off an overactive mind.
Linden (tilia tomentosa)
Linden has the ability to mimic the activity of GABA in the brain and thus promote relaxation and calmness. It can also act as a natural mild sedative and helps to release tension and lower blood pressure, which are all great for the preparation of sleep.
Lemon Balm (melissa officinalis)
Rosmarinic acid, a compound found in lemon balm is believed to create a positive mood, promote calmness and decrease stress. Studies of lemon balm suggest that its effects help to also relieve insomnia, and that it works at its best when combined with other herbs. Lemon balm is also effective in soothing the gastrointestinal tract.
Lavender (lavendula angustifolia)
Lavender is a very traditional and widely used flower that is known to promote calmness and relaxation with the plant itself and with the aroma it produces on our senses. So as you drink this tisane also breathe it in.
Hops (humulus lupulus)
The dried female flowers of this plant are widely used to treat insomnia and sleeping disorders. Studies containing non-alcoholic beer made with hops concluded that the sleep quality of the participants significantly improved. Hops is also effective in helping to reduce anxiety, stress, mild depression and restlessness. It may also help to lower core body temperature which is an important physiological step towards sleep.
